Google Indexing Issue: My Experience

google indexing issue
The Google indexing issue is a problem many website owners face, especially for the new website with no traffic or authority. It can be frustrating to spend hours trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it, but there are ways you can do this more quickly!

Sometimes indexing the URLs can take over a month, which is precisely what happened with me. So I waited, check google’s indexing status every single day.

Then one morning, I checked the site: and Voilà my key pages were indexed!

This was when I decided to write this blog post about how patience and some activities can help your site get indexed.

But first, let’s talk about what the google indexing issue means.

The Google Indexing Issue: The problem where websites are not being adequately crawled by Google and therefore do not show their content in search results even though the webmaster has updated their sitemap or submitted URLs through Webmasters tools (or other methods).

Before diving into the details, let us go towards how I figured out my website’s indexing issue:

As I went live on the website in the month of April 2021 I had a habit of doing a site:cypherseo.com to check the indexing of my vital pages.

However, as time flew by, only the non-vital and blog pages started to get indexed, and I was like, what is happening? My pages were in the Discovered but not indexed section for a very long time. Then, with the help of specific experiments, all of my vital pages were indexed one day, and I was like, let’s share this with others.

This article will share the most common causes of the google indexing issue and methods to fix them.

The key issues to highlight and their possible solution which can improve google indexing issue:

Resources Content Sitemap

Blocked Resources

Website resources like JS, CSS, HTML are the platform on which your web pages are built. Hence these scripts must be open for Google Bot to carry out a proper crawl and index your website.

Problem:

Google bot can find it difficult to crawl the website if specific resources are blocked. This can hamper the crawl quality, and it might not display the search results you want to demonstrate to the final User the way you want it to.

Scripts like JS, CSS, images or informational code should not be blocked to avoid an improper page crawl. Robots.txt is a primary file that you should focus on here.

Solution:

Check your robots.txt file, the codes like (In wordpress)

Disallow: /wp-content/

Disallow:/wp-upload/

Disallow: /?

If you have blocked any for these folders please allow them.

The wp-related folders should not be blocked as they have all of your JS and CSS scripts.

If you are looking to block a dynamic URL, don’t just enter the above code as if you check the URL of any JS or CSS also have a “?” in the URL; hence use Robots.txt tester to ensure you are not blocking these resources while blocking URL parameters.

Once the resources are open to crawl, your website might get indexed optimally.

Sitemap Issue:

An optimal sitemap helps search engines to crawl your page more efficiently. It provides information regarding the pages, videos, and other files on your site and the connections between them.

Problem:

Sitemap with unwanted/orphan URLs can waste your crawl budget, making your vital pages lose an opportunity to get crawled.

Another issue you might stumble with is that a sitemap with redirect/404 URLs can confuse the bot with getting towards the actual page.

Some sitemaps set priority to the pages as per the site structure, so you should check that your vital pages do not fall under a low priority score.

Solution:

Make sure you optimize your sitemap with meaningful URLs only and remove URLs with redirect/404 code/orphan pages.

A well-structured sitemap improves the efficiency of the crawl, so check out the priority in the sitemap and keep your vital pages at the highest priority score. Most important, Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console.

If a significant page goes to the orphan category, link that page in the content and add it to the sitemap.

Content Quality

Google is now emphasizing focusing on the quality of the content. The content needs to be highly relevant to the keyword, and it should not be created for keyword stuffing.

Problem:

Thin and Less Content can cause indexing issues as Google might not find the page informative towards the target keyword. Also, check the duplicate content as it might obstruct the crawling, and this might cause a google indexing issue on the page with duplicated content.

Solution:

Write unique and long content by respecting the intent of the keyword and SERP and don’t just perform keyword stuffing just for gaining those ranks.

Avoid copy-pasting other websites’ content. Use keyword clusters to add several related keywords to a particular page.

The above were the primary issue any SEO’s can face. However, I had everything optimal before launching my website and still face indexing issues.

Pages Not Mobile-Friendly

Mobile-friendly websites are a vital part of an online presence. The number of smartphone users has surpassed the number of desktop users in many countries. You should make your website mobile-friendly if you want fast indexing for your website. You can test whether a page on your site is mobile-friendly using Search Console’s Mobile-Friendly Test Tool.

Problem:

Improper page layout, resources that failed to load may cause the issue of page not being the mobile-friendly. If you’re website is failed in mobile friendly test you will face Google indexing issue. Check on the below mentioned issue:

So what did I do to get my vital URLs out of Google Indexing Issue?

Content Backlink Internal Link Social Bookmark

Fixing Internal Linking:

Yes, Yes, this is the essential thing to do, but it did not work initially. So here is the internal linking improvement I performed:

  • I checked which of my pages were indexed and got the internal links towards the non-indexed page.
  • Step-by-step, I use internal link pages which were indexed to the pages which were not.
  • Once done, I used to submit the URL in Search Console for a crawl.

Do this, and you might see improvement in your indexing rate.

Fix Mobile-Friendliness Issue

To improve mobile friendliness of the website/page, you need to fix the resources that are not getting loaded optimally such as CSS and JS. Moreover you need to focus on size and spacing of the fonts on the website. Keep it constant everywhere.

Check Host Status in Crawl Analysis:

Make sure you check your host status and is there any fail rate to:

  • Robots.txt fetch
  • DNS Resolution
  • Server Connectivity

Also, check on the crawl request and analyze the crawl request breakdown by the type of URLs.

Always keep your Search Console clean and happy 😉

Perform Social Bookmarking:

Yes, I know that social bookmarking is a pretty outdated off-page SEO technique, but doing this might have helped me improve my Google index issue.

  • Perform link submission on higher traffic platforms like Pinterest, Flipboard, Scoop It etc.
  • Send all the backlink URLs to a ping website.

Make sure you don’t overdo it as social bookmarking might not bring any value to the website; hence do it till your pages are indexed.

Tip: Twitter can get you faster results 😛

Upload External Blogs:

I also created few external blogs for my target keyword to get external traction over my website

  • Analyze external blog keywords which are different from my target keywords
  • Add my target keyword in the content and send the link to my main website
  • Once the blog is approved, ping it!

An external blog can bring massive value to your main website, and it will also help to boost the domain authority of the page you are targeting.

Off-page won’t start working immediately, but you will have to keep things tested.

The above suggestions might not work for everyone, but they did work for me! And as I say, SEO is Dynamic! You will have to keep on experimenting with things which I do day and night 😛
